A watercolour showing a Highland landscape looking towards Lochnagar Mountain. Continued on RCIN 980039.bv verso. While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 17 September 1864, the Queen rode up the Meall an t-Slugain with her third daughter, Princess Helena. Queen Victoria records the visit in her journal entry of that day, describing how they "stopped ½ way [up the mountain] for luncheon & I sketched for some time" before continuing to the Slugain Shiel.
