While staying at Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 17 September 1864, the Queen rode up the Meall an t-Slugain with her third daughter, Princess Helena. Queen Victoria records the visit in her journal entry of that day, describing how they "stopped ½ way [up the mountain] for luncheon & I sketched for some time" before continuing to the Slugain Shiel.
