A watercolour showing a view of the gardens at the Rosenau. Autumnal trees are shown in the foreground with mountains in the background. Inscribed below: Oct: 15 1862 Rosenau. Queen Victoria travelled to Brussels on 1 September 1862, to arrange the betrothal of her eldest son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. On the 4 September the Queen travelled to Reinhardsbrunn, where she stayed until 3 October 1862 in the house of her brother-in-law, Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, before moving on to stay at the palace at Coburg until 17 October 1862. The 15 October 1862 was the 23rd anniversary of the engagement of Queen Victoria and her late husband, Prince Albert. Queen Victoria described in her journal entry of that day how she "Wished to spend the morning at the dear Rosenau", Prince Albert's birthplace.
