While visiting Balmoral, Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 17 October 1866, the Queen drove to Glen Ey, on the Mar Lodge Estate, with two of her daughters, Princess Helena and Princess Louise. They stopped at the Colonel's Bed for lunch and then went in search of the Altanour Lodge. Queen Victoria records the trip in her journal entry of that day, describing how they "were much pleased with the grand scenery". -
