A pencil drawing showing a view of the Surenen Pass looking towards Engelberg. Trees are shown at the top of a steep slope to the left. Further slopes are shown to the right. Inscribed below: Surenen Pass Aug: 11. 68. Queen Victoria stayed at Pension Wallis, Lucerne from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 22 August 1868 Queen Victoria and her party made an expedition to Furca through the St. Gotthard Pass. In her journal entry of that day, the Queen describes how, while travelling, they "soon came to where one looks up Surenen Pass, behind which Engelberg lies, — immensely high mountains rise on either side… I wish I could describe properly, the beauty of [it] all".
