A watercolour showing a landscape with a distant view of the camp at Aldershot. Inscribed lower left: June 16.\56
Queen Victoria visited the camp at Aldershot with Prince Albert and their two eldest daughters, on 16 June 1856. The Queen inspected the Cavalry recently home from the Crimea, including troops from Germany and Switzerland as well as British soldiers.
Queen Victoria describes the visit in her journal entry of that day, stating "It quite filled one with emotion & respect, when in looking at those fine men, & at some of their horses, one thought of how they had been through all that fearful Charge".
The Queen and her family stopped for luncheon at the Royal Pavilion and describes how "The view [from the Royal Pavillion was] lovely, looking towards the Camps, & surrounded all round by hills. I sketched for some time, sitting with the girls by the open windows." -
