A watercolour showing a view of Glen Isla from the Caenlochan. Continued on RCIN 980032.ap verso. The River Isla is shown to the left, surrounded by Highland hills. The hills are shown stretching out to the right. Inscribed on RCIN 980032.ap verso: Glen Isla, from where we lunched above Cairn Lochan [sic] Oct: 16. 1861. Verso: a loose pencil sketch showing a view of hills. While staying at Balmoral Queen Victoria made many expeditions to local beauty spots. On 16 October 1861 the queen rode from Loch Callater to Loch Kander, up to the Cairn of Claise before stopping at Caenlochan Glen for lunch. In her journal entry for that day, Queen Victoria describes how she "made some hasty sketches" before continuing on her expedition.
