A pen and ink and pencil drawing showing Prince Philipp and Princess Clotild of Saxe-Cobug-Gotha. Prince Philipp is shown in two pen and ink studies to the right. He is shown full-length, standing and facing right in both studies. In the study to the far right he is holding a stick, possibly a toy sword, in one hand and resting the other on an unknown surface in front of him. Inscribed below: Philippe [sic] Coburg. Two pencil studies of a small child, probably Princess Clotilde, are shown to the left. In the upper study she is shown half-length, facing forward with her head tilted slightly to the left. She is holding one hand up to her face with her index finger held pointing upwards. In the bust length study below she is shown facing left in profile. Inscribed lower right: VR. from nature March. 10-12. 1848 - Prince Philipp and Princess Clotilde were the children of Queen Victoria's cousin Prince August of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his wife Princess Clémentine of Orléans. In her journal entry of 12 March 1848, Queen Victoria described how she "sketched little Clotilde".
