A watercolour showing a housemaid at the Rosenau in traditional Coburg costume. She is shown full-length, standing facing left with one hand clasping her other wrist at her waist. She is wearing a long skirt and embroidered blouse with a tall black headdress. Inscribed below: [?Insamsa] Rosenau. Aug: 25 - 1845 VR del from nature. -
In August 1845, Queen Victoria made her first visit to her husband's homeland. The Royal Family arrived in Germany on 11 August and then visited the Rosenau, Prince Albert's childhood home, from 19 to 27 August 1845. In her journal entry of 25 August 1845, Queen Victoria describes how she "sketched a lovely housemaid... in her Costume". -
