Princess Victoria received her first drawing lesson from the artist Richard Westall in 1827, when she was eight years old. She started by copying Westall’s drawings of horses, hands and eyes and later copied some of his finished studies, all produced for this purpose.
This drawing was a birthday gift for Princess Victoria's mother, The Duchess of Kent, who was born 17 August 1786.
