A pencil drawing showing the characters of Roxanna and Atalide from Racine's play Bajazet. The two women are shown in theatrical Ottoman costume. Roxanna is shown standing full-length with her arms crossed. She is looking down at Atalide who is kneeling to the right.
Inscribed below: Roxanna. Atalide. "J'aurai soin de ma mort prenez soin de sa vie:" "Allez, Madame, allez: avant votre retour" "J'aurai d'une rivale affranchi votre amour."
Inscribed lower left: P.V. del Claremont 1837.
Princess Victoria's governess Baroness Lehzen gave her the works of Racine for her 15th birthday in 1834. Victoria re-read Bajazet from 7-12 February 1837, which probably inspired her drawings of scenes from the play. -
