-
A watercolour showing the Italian opera singers Giulia Grisi and Luigi Lablache as characters in Bellini's opea I Puritani. Lablache is shown full-length, facing right in profile and has his arm around Grisi, who is shown from behind. They are both dressed in theatrical costume.
Inscribed below: Mme Grisi & Signor Lablache as Elvira & Giorgio in (I Puritani) Act I, scene IV."Piangi, o figlia sul mio seno."
Inscribed lower left: P.V. del. KP. April 16 1837. From recollection.
I Puritani was Queen Victoria's favourite opera, and she often referred to as "dear Puritani". Princess Victoria saw I Puritani performed on 8 April 1837, the first time she saw it that season. The princess had already seen it performed on several occasions during previous seasons. -
