A pencil drawing showing the Italian opera singer Giulia Grisi as Elvira in Bellini's opera I Puritani. She is shown full-length, facing right, with her face turned away from the viewer. She is dressed in theatrical costume.
Inscribed lower left: PV. del. K.P. May 1st 1836. Madame Grisi as Elvira in I Puritani.
Inscribed lower right: At the finale of the first act.
I Puritani was Queen Victoris's favourite opera, which she often referred to as "dear Puritani". Both Grisi and Lablache (along with Giovanni Battista Rubini and Antonio Tamburini) became known as the Puritani Quartet after their performances in this opera. Princess Victoria had seen I Puritani several times before May 1836, the most recent performance before the creation of this drawing being April 30 1836. -
