A watercolour showing the Italian opera singer Giulia Grisi as the character of Elvira in Bellini's opera I Puritani. She is shown from behind, facing to the right. She is wearing theatrical costume.
Inscribed below: Mdlle G. Grisi as Elvira in I Puritani singing the celebrated Polacca in the 1st act. Elvira: "Son vergin vezzosa in vesta di sposa, son bianca ed umile qual giglio d'april".
Inscribed lower left: P.V.d. K.P. July 28th 1835.
I Puritani was Queen Victoria's favourite opera, which she often referred to as "dear Puritani". She had seen the opera several times before July 19 1835, the most recent visit before the creation of this drawing being July 18 1835. -
