A pencil drawing showing the Italian opera singer Giulia Grisi as the character of Elvira and the monumental basso Luigi Lablache as Giorgio in Bellini's opera I Puritani. They are shown full-length, Lablache is facing forward with his arm around Grisi who is facing towards him. They are both dressed in theatrical costume.
Inscribed below: Mdlle G. Grisi as Elvira and Signor Lablache as Giorgia in the opera of I Puritani in the 1st act.
Inscribed lower left: P.V.d K.P. July 19th 1835.
I Puritani was Queen Victoria's favourite opera, which she often referred to as "dear Puritani". Both Grisi and Lablache (along with Giovanni Battista Rubini and Antonio Tamburini) became known as the Puritani Quartet after their performances in this opera. Princess Victoria had seen the opera several times before July 19 1835, the most recent visit before the creation of this drawing being July 18 1835. -
