I Puritani was Queen Victoria's favourite opera, which she often referred to as "dear Puritani". Both Grisi and Lablache (along with Giovanni Battista Rubini and Antonio Tamburini) became known as the Puritani Quartet after their performances in this opera. Princess Victoria had seen the opera several times before July 19 1835, the most recent visit before the creation of this drawing being July 18 1835.
