A pencil drawing of Charles the exiled Duke of Brunswick. He is facing left with his head bowed. He is wearing a Black coat and top hat.
Inscribed below: Herzog Karl von Braunschweig [Duke Charles of Brunswick]
Inscribed lower left: From recollection, from a distance.
Queen Victoria met the Duke of Brunswick, who was her cousin, as a child but had not met him since. After a coup in 1830, Charles' brother William was placed on the throne and Charles spent the rest of his life outside of Germany. Victoria was fascinated by the Duke and studied him from afar, both from her box at the opera and when she was out riding in the park. -
