Antonio Visentini (Venice 1688- Venice 1782)
The title to a volume of Canaletto drawings c. 1730-50
-
The titlepage to a volume of drawings by Canaletto: featuring the arms of Consul Jospen Smith in an architectural surround.
Visentini was employed by Consul Smith to paint titlepages for the folios in which he bound up his drawings. Six of these volumes survive with their titles; the others have been broken up for mounting and the titlepages have disappeared, except that from the Canaletto volume. It is likely that similar titlepages existed in Smith's volumes of Marco Ricci and Piazzetta drawings, and perhaps in the Carracci and Castiglione folios.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
