A 'kinetic' stained glass coat of arms of the city of Sunderland, featuring two lines capped with a ship. Unlike leaded stained glass, the pane is lit from the front and the light is trapped by the kinetic engravings.
In 1992, on the fortieth anniversary of The Queen's reign, Sunderland won a nationwide competition to be granted city status by royal charter. The Queen subsequently visited Sunderland in 1993, when she was presented with this panel. Its creation in glass refers back to the glassmaking industry in Sunderland first established at the Anglo-Saxon monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in AD674 when craftsmen were brought from Gaul to create the first stained glass window in England. The inclusion of a ship, an anchor and a miner's pick within the coat of arms refer to later industries in Sunderland and on the River Wear. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh departed from Sunderland on HMY Britannia.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by Sunderland City Council, 18 May 1993.
