One panel from a series of Flemish tapestries depicting Dido and Aeneas, illustrating the death of Dido. She is discovered by her sister and attendants as she stabs herself. Onlookers watch as Aeneas's ship departs. Border of blue cartouches with putti and swags of fruit, flowers, shells and dolphins flanked by Corinthian columns. Woven in the workshop of Michael Wauters after cartoons by Giovanni Romanelli. One of three panels from this series in the Royal Collection.
Provenance
Purchased by the Holyrood Amenity Trust in 1927 for £1800 from Robert Lauder for the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Half the purchase price was contributed by Lord Weir and his half-brother, R.S. Richmond. Previously in the collection of Lady Ardilaun, widow of Sir Benjamin Guiness.
