Verso: signature of subject, and inscription. Paper in three joined sections. Harry Patch was born in 1898 and trained as a plumber. He was conscripted in 1917 and fought as a Lewis machine-gunner, participating in the three-month battle of Passchendaele. He was awarded the Légion d’Honneur by France. Harry Patch died on 25 July 2009. This study is one of seven made by Dan Llywelyn Hall during a two-hour sitting with Mr Patch, and is the only full-length study from the group. Mr Patch is shown seated in the care home in which he lived for the final years of his life. On seeing the finished painting taken from the studies, he said he was ‘pleased’ with the result.
