Muslim Festival of Muhurram c. 1850

A colourful procession led by a camel celebrating Muharram, the festival on the first day of the Islamic calendar. As Shia worshipers they practice azadari in commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn. A ta'zia (decorated miniature mausoleum) under a canopy with winged lions (buraqs) is carried through the streets while bare-chested, ashen men wear metal chains to express their pain and sorrow. At the front, youths dressed up as tigers perform the puli kali (tiger-dance).
