7.4 x 9.7 cm (whole object) | RCIN 933317
-
A small loose-leaf album, bound in abraded leather with a metal clasp, formerly containing 24 loose folios, prepared with a metalpoint-type coating on both sides (folios 10, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 22-24 are not present; the final folio is not numbered). Inscribed in pen on the flyleaf, in the hand of William Gibson, '24. disegni. del / Parmigiano / 7.2.' (his price mark, = 17s 6d); and on the verso of the flyleaf, pencil, 'Tom. I / 24 leaves / JHG' (= John Glover, Royal Librarian 1837-60).
All the folios are now blank, but they formerly housed RCINs 990540, 990542-3, 990551-7, 990569-77, 990585-8, 990591, which are all copies after Parmigianino drawings once in the collection of Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel (1585-1646); the copies were probably made by one of the artists employed by Arundel, such as Lucas Vorsterman.Provenance
From the collection of William Gibson (1644-1703; his inscription on the flyleaf); presumably acquired by Charles II. Probably to be identified with an album in 'A List of The Books of Drawings and Prints in The Buroe in His Majestys Great Closet at Kensington' (BL, MS Add. 20101, f.28r), c.1727, 'No. 23. Another by the same hand' [ie. 'Parmesano']. Subsequently listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 132, 'Four small Pocket Books of Drawings by Parmegiano', 'Tom. I. Contains Twenty four Drawings.'
