Miss Meyer
[Mary Queen of Scots] late 18th-early 19th century
-
A drawing in pencil with watercolour of Mary, Queen of Scots. Bust length with hair under a lace cap and black hat, also depicted wearing a jewelled necklace, open ruff, white gown, and mantle. Without signature or title, however an inscription from an unknown date states that the portrait was 'Drawn by the daughter of J. Meyer R.A.'
Little information survives about the family life of the miniature painter Jeremiah Meyer, however it is known that he had a number of children with his wife Barbara Marsden, perhaps three sons and two daughters. Few details are known about the daughters of Meyer other than that one, Mary, was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1771 as a child. -
