John Brand (1744-1806)
[St Margaret, Queen of Scotland] 1792
-
Pen and ink drawing of Saint Margaret, Queen of Scotland. After a print, bust length with halo, loose hair, jewelled gown, and mantle. Within an oval border bearing Latin title, and with coats of arms above, and leaves below. With Latin inscription on pedestal below. This drawing is a copy of an extremely rare engraving by Albert Clouwet. Inscribed on the verso is the following: 'From the very rare original on sattin in the collection of Sir John St Aubyn Bt. by John Brand at North House March 1792.'
During the late 18th century, antiquarian and print collector John Brand (1744-1806) made a number of hand-drawn copies of prints, to extra-illustrate his copy of James Granger's A Biographical history of England. Brand borrowed prints from notable collectors and made numerous copies for his Granger, and to illustrate other volumes in his library. Brand often signed his copies on the verso, noting the date of their creation and from whom he had borrowed the original portrait. Following his death in 1807 his Granger was dismantled and his prints and drawings were dispersed at a sale of 1807. The Royal Collection has a group of portraits by Brand, see RCINs 650530, 650907, 651143, 651143, 654726, 654844, 655714, 657528, 658887, 661334, 663106, and 933195.
