A study of a man with a suitcase dated 27 Aug 1930
Black and white chalk on brown paper | 73.3 x 54.8 cm (whole object) | RCIN 932756
-
A black and white chalk drawing of an Indian man sitting on suitcase, chin resting in palm, facing right; faint outline of same figure, scaled down, at right. Signed by the artist.
Gopal Damodar Deuskar studied at the Sir. J.J. School of Art, and later became Deputy Director of the same school. He travelled to Paris, Vienna, Madrid and Berlin, and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Deuskar won the Viceroy's medal at the Simla Art Exhibition and the Gold Medal of the Bombay Art Society. He primarily worked as a portraitist, painting members of India's royal families and leaders. This drawing has the character of having been drawn from a posed studio model rather than a sketch made at a railway station, and provides a uniquely Indian version of the ubiquitous Academy study that artists used to train their hand.Provenance
One of seven drawings by Indian students presented to Queen Mary during her visit to India House, 1930; transferred to the Royal Library, 25 November 1930 -
