A study for a depiction of the balcony scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This is one of a group of designs made by Herbert Bone for the Royal Tapestry Manufactory at Windsor, which opened in 1876. On the verso is a study for the unfinished tapestry The Coming of the Dane.
A finished Romeo and Juliet tapestry, dated 1886, is in the collection of the National Gallery Victoria (accession number p.169-D1M).
