"The Gouthier Cabinet"
-
The Comtesse de Provence Jewel Cabinet, by Jean-Henri Riesener. Adorned with numerous classical motifs, such as the caryatid figures on the corners of the cabinets, and the gilt sculptural group surmounting the piece, with putti & Royal Arms of Savoy and France (for Marie-Joséphine-Louise de Savoie, comtesse de Provence (1753-1810)).
The cabinet was described incorrectly as 'The Gouthier Cabinet', reflecting the ascendancy in the 19th century of the name of the great Parisian bronzier Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), which eclipsed that of Riesener, the maker of the cabinet. The cabinet is in the Royal Collection: 31207Provenance
Presented to Queen Mary in 1935
