A pen and ink drawing of a scene from Shakespeare's Richard III. The Duke of Gloucester is shown inviting the widowed Lady Anne to kill him. The actors here are probably Walter Montgomery as Richard III and Adelaide Bowring as Lady Anne, from the production mounted at the Theatre Royal in Melbourne. This is one of a series of drawings by Chevalier illustrating theatrical subjects mounted into an album owned by Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. Many of these probably show Shakespeare plays attended by the duke in Sydney in 1869.
Inscribed: NC 1869. / Nay, do not pause, for I did kill King Henry, / But, 'twas they beauty that provoked me. / Richard III (Act I Sc. II) -
