A watercolour of a scene from Hamlet (Act III, scene iv). The actors here are probably Walter Montgomery (as Hamlet) and Mrs Jones (as Gertrude). This is one of a series of drawings by Chevalier illustrating theatrical subjects mounted into an album owned by Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. Many of these probably show Shakespeare plays attended by the duke in Sydney in 1869. The actors here are probably Walter Montgomery (as Hamlet) and Mrs Jones (as Gertrude). By the time Chevalier made this drawing, he was on board the Galatea, off Auckland, but probably based this drawing on earlier sketches.
