-
A watercolour view of Bamburgh Castle, viewed from the west with farm buildings in front. Signed, dated and inscribed. Sir John Miller Adye was an army officer who served in the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny. He was also an accomplished artist, and there are three watercolours including this one by him in the Royal Collection (See RCIN 917580 and 917580). Additionally, Queen Victoria is known to have owned another drawing by Adye, titled 'The Charge of Heavy Cavalry at Balaclava' (1854), which is now untraced. Bamburgh Castle (in Northumberland) was extensively restored by Baron Armstrong, who purchased it in around 1890. Sir John Adye's son-in-law was the nephew and heir of Armstrong.
