Dora Webb (1886-1973)
Diana meditating c.1923
Watercolour | RCIN 927481
-
A miniature watercolour of the godess Diana, seated to left beneath a tree, with her elbow on her knee and a bow held in her right hand; wearing a leopard skin skirt and a diadem.
Dora Webb’s portrayal of the goddess Diana imagines her at rest, meditating. The attenuated forms of an idealised mythological figure, as represented by George Spencer Watson in RCIN 927464, have been replaced by the limbs of a more solid and grounded individual, perhaps based on drawings after a real artist’s model with studio props.
A member of the Royal Miniature Society, Dora Webb contributed ten watercolours to Queen Mary’s collection in the Dolls’ House, with subjects ranging from topographical views and horses, to royal portraiture.Provenance
Commissioned for the Library in Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House.
