In February and March 1966, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh undertook a five-week tour of the Caribbean during which The Queen and Prince Philip received this marquetry panel depicting the Coat of Arms of Trinidad and Tobago. The bird supporters are the Scarlet Ibis and the Cocrico; the shield shows a pair of Hummingbirds and the three ships of Christopher Columbus and also representing the Trinity after which it is believed Columbus named Trinidad. The coat of arms was approved by the College of Arms and granted by Royal Warrant in 1962. Below the coat of arms is the national motto ‘Together we aspire, Together we achieve’ and to the bottom left and right hand corners of the plaque are representations of the two islands.
