-
A pastel portrait of a bay horse trotting to the right outside a stable. The frame is inscribed with the artist's name and the date '1843'.
Cambrian was bought in 1840 and often ridden by Prince Albert. On 14 November 1843 Queen Victoria rode 'Albert's charming & beautiful horse, which went so well, & is so admirably broken in' for the first time (Queen Victoria's Journal). Cambrian died in 1859.
Seemingly a portrait painter and painter of horses, little is known about Sperling, whose first name was possibly Julius. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1845 and 1848, including a picture of a stallion belonging to the King of Württemburg. A lithograph, dated 1848, of a portrait of Baron von Hügel bears the same (draughtman's) signature as visible on RCIN 926155 (see the impression in the National Portrait Gallery).Provenance
On 20 November 1843 Sperling was paid £110 5s for six pastels (including this work) commissioned by Prince Albert
