-
A wooden carved stool with an upturned seat decorated with gold leaf and carved with pierced scrolls.
Ceremonial stools of this kind were made by the Asante people for important chiefs and officeholders. They derive from the foremost symbol of the Asante kingdom, the Golden Stool, which according to tradition descended from heaven in the seventeenth century. The divine stool was not used as a seat but instead was displayed on a chair of its own during court ceremonies.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Government of Ghana during her State Visit to Ghana, 9–20 November 1961.
