दुर्गा Durga kills the demon Raktabija 1800-50
-
An illustration to the Devi Mahatmya: Durga, the Hindu goddess of protection, vengeance, and victory, battles the demon Raktabija. She rides a tiger as she attacks the purple-skinned demon with the weapons of all the principal deities: a spear, trident, a sabre, bow and arrows, a noose and an elephant goad. In the foreground, Kali, another manifestation of the goddess, holds a discus, sword and trident as she drinks the blood pouring from Raktabija's body. Two red-mouthed jackals follow in the bottom left.
The style of painting and its borders associate it with the artists of the Punjab Hills in the early 19th centuryProvenance
Thought to have been acquired by Queen Mary.
