Painting of Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, seated on a lakeside palace terrace. He sits on a floral carpet under an awning wearing a floral jama and striped patka (waist sash). He holds a gold staff in his left hand, and a sword in his right. On the left, a musician plays the rabab. On the right, a servant stands behind the Guru with a flywhisk.
This is one of a series of idealised portraits depicting the first nine Sikh Gurus (RCINS 925202-925210) painted in the Punjab in the early-mid 19th century. Each Guru is depicted sitting against a bolster cushion on a lakeside terrace listening to a musician. Above the portraits are their names are written in Punjabi in Gurmukhi script and the paintings are surrounded by illuminated borders.Provenance
