This is one of a series of idealised portraits depicting the first nine Sikh Gurus (RCINS 925202-925210) painted in the Punjab in the early-mid 19th century. Each Guru is depicted sitting against a bolster cushion on a lakeside terrace listening to a musician. Above the portraits are their names are written in Punjabi in Gurmukhi script and the paintings are surrounded by illuminated borders.
