A painting of Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru seated on a lakeside palace terrace. He sits on a floral carpet wearing a transparent muslin jama over gold floral brocade pyjamas. He holds a rumal (handkerchief) in his left hand with his right extended towards the musician playing the rabab. On the ground in front of him is a bird-headed staff. A servant standing behind the Guru fans him with a shawl.
This is one of a series of idealised portraits depicting the first nine Sikh Gurus (RCINS 925202-925210) painted in the Punjab in the early-mid 19th century. Each Guru is depicted sitting against a bolster cushion on a lakeside terrace listening to a musician. Above the portraits are their names are written in Punjabi in Gurmukhi script and the paintings are surrounded by illuminated borders.Provenance
