Charles-Louis Clérisseau (1722-1820)
Ruins of a Roman Temple: end wall 1763
Bodycolour | RCIN 925169
Queen's Drawing Room, Windsor Castle
-
A watercolour of a Roman temple, showing part of the end wall with a statue in a niche. Two men are admiring the sculpture. This is one of five watercolours inserted into a cabinet by Pierre Golle (RCIN 35309). It is not known at what date the works were added to the cabinet, but the five complement each other in suggesting a perspectival view and they may always have been intended for such a purpose. One of the watercolours is signed and dated: CLERISSEAU: F. ROMA 1763.
