A pen and ink and wash view of the square in front of the Palace Reale in Paris, with tents erected between two circular classical buildings and crowds gathering beneath and the classical facade of palace beyond. Inscribed lower left 'Palaso Reale Parigi 1786'. A drawing attributed to Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine (1745-1830) which appears to be an exact copy of this sketch was offered at auction by Piasa, Paris, in 2005. The dimensions of the work attributed to Gourdaine, which came from the Lemonnier collection, match those of David's sketch.
