Hunters, armed with bows and arrows and rifles, fire at a lion, which charges them from the left. Mountains in background. Inscribed on mount 'Mountains of Victoria. Damaraland. S. Africa. Discovered by Jas. Edw. Alexander. K.L.S 42 R.H'.
Captain James Edward Alexander (1803−85) exchanged to the 42nd Highlanders in 1832. Between 1836 and 1837, he travelled through Namaqualand and Damaraland (now Namibia) on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society, drawing maps of the region and compiling a list of Otjiherero words. James Alexander was knighted in 1838, this drawing may therefore be dated to before his knighthood.
