Heinrich Christian August Buntzen (1803-92)
Charlottenlund dated 1863
-
A pencil and wash drawing of a glade in the forest of Charlottenlund, with a carriage in the right foreground. Signed, inscribed and dated: "Charlottenlund / Heinr Buntzen fec 1863". The drawing is circumscribed by a double-ruled ink border. Charlottenlund Forest surrounded the Danish royal castle, Charlottenlund, which was rebuilt by King Christian VI of Denmark and named after his sister Charlotte Amalie. This drawing was probably one of the set of works presented to Princess Alexandra of Denmark on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Albert Edward (later King Edward VII) in 1863, by and including, according to 'The Denmark' of February 1863, "some young ladies ... with views in Denmark by the best Danish artists." Buntzen was a Danish landscape painter with whom it seems Prince George of Wales (later King George V) had some drawing lessons whilst visiting his grandparents in Bernsdorff in September 1874; the Royal Collection holds a sketchbook, labelled as belonging to Prince George, containing pencil drawings but also Buntzen's signature and the date "1874" on the first folio (RCIN 981303).
