Charlotte Canning, Viscountess Canning (1817-61)
The setting for the Grand Chasse in the Thuringian Forest, near Reinhardsbrunn c.1845
-
An ink and wash study of the enclosure in the Thuringhian Forest for a deer drive, as seen from the Royal Pavilion; armed hunters wait on the left for the deer to be driven in. The drawing is circumscribed on three sides by largely ruled pencil lines. On brown paper, stamped "CRAYON PAPERS / FAST COLOURS / CRESWICK".
This drawing dates from the first visit made to Coburg by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, whose brother Ernest II was Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This was during August of 1845 and the Queen and Prince Albert enjoyed a full programme of entertainment, such as the expedition to Thuringian forest to watch the deer drive on 30 August. Queen Victoria, however, confessed to reservations about this particular activity, writing in her Journal: "I cannot say that this sort of sport is to my liking, & it seems to me that it is hardly real sport."
Charlotte, Viscountess Canning was in Waiting to the Queen during the trip to Coburg, and her artistic talent was such that she was commanded particularly to document the events of the journey to and residence to the Duchy in drawings and watercolours. Queen Victoria greatly admired Lady Canning's productions, describing them as "so like the places", and there is a large corpus of works by her in the Royal Collection. Many of these were originally mounted in the Souvenir Albums that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert compiled together over the course of their marriage.
There is a pencil and ink study for this drawing in the collection of Harewood House, bearing the same title and dated 27 August.Provenance
