Scene from A Midsummer's Night's Dream dated 1856
-
A watercolour of Charles Kean's production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. This scene from Act II, scene two shows Carlotta Leclerq as Titania, with the fairies in moonlight. Queen Victoria described the production, which she saw at the Princess's Theatre on 17 February 1857, as 'really beautifully given with the music by Mendelssohn'. She praised the scene depicted here as 'quite exquisite'.
This watercolour is mounted in the Theatrical Album, a blue morocco album presented to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852, into which the queen pasted theatrical watercolours, drawings and photographs until 1861. A small number of further items have been added at the back of the album. Queen Victoria greatly valued the album, of which she wrote to her daughter Victoria 'has been so much admired. I take the g[rea]test. care of it, & do not let it out of my Hands'.Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria; Lundgren was paid 17 guineas for this and RCIN 921341 on 25 March 1857 (Royal Archives PP2/23/7731)
