Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717)
Turk's Cap Lily c.1705?
-
A watercolour of a Turk's Cap Lily (Lilium martagon). Another version of this drawing is in the British Museum (SL,5276.82) and a partial variation by Maria Sibylla Merian's daughter Johanna Herolt in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig. Ella Reitsma, who has discussed all three drawings, suggests that they are all by Johanna Herolt (Ella Reitsma, Maria Sibylla Merian and Daughters. Women of Art and Science, Amsterdam and Los Angeles 2008, pp.154-5).
Provenance
Dr Richard Mead (1673–1754); his sale (London, Abraham Langford, 13–16 January 1755, lot 66), where purchased by an unknown collector; sold 15 June 1768 (London, Paterson and Eve, lot 572), where purchased by Sir John Hill via Wilson; George III by c.1810
