A watercolour of a Wallflower (Erysimum cheiri) with an unidentified blue butterfly. The butterfly also appears in a drawing jointly attributed to Merian and Willem de Heer in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (see Kurt Wettengl, ed., Maria Sibylla Merian. Artist and Naturalist 1647-1717, Frankfurt 1998, fig. 32). The Wallflower also appears in a drawing signed by Merian's daughter Johanna Herolt (see ibid. cat. 120).
