9th August 1902 was the date of the Coronation of King Edward VII, eldest son and heir of Queen Victoria and who reigned 1901-10. This watercolour was presented by the artist as part of the Coronation gift to the new King from The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (now known as the Royal Watercolour Society). It became a tradition for the institution's members to present works to the monarch and other members of the royal family on significant occasions from Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887 onwards. Other artistic societies also presented their own gifts.
