George Henry Andrews (1816-98)
Niagara: Horseshoe Fall from Goat Island dated 1860
-
A watercolour view of the Horseshoe Falls from Goat Island, with the watch-tower centre left. Signed, dated and inscribed. Sheet has curved top.
George Henry Andrews worked for the Illustrated London News between 1856 and 1860, and in May and June of 1860 was sent to Canada to make a series of watercolours to be reproduced as illustrations to the newspaper's coverage of the Prince of Wales's tour to Canada and the United States. Andrews then accompanied the royal party on the tour, made between July and October of 1860, as the representative of the Illustrated London News and made many sketches on the spot.
The Prince spent three days exploring Niagara Falls, visiting both the American and Canadian sides. According to The Times, who also sent an artist to accompany the full tour, the Prince and his party undertook all the expeditions associated with the site, even entering the Cave of the Winds, where one was subject to immersion in spray and water.
Along with other works by Andrews documenting the Prince's tour, this watercolour was originally mounted in a volume in the Royal Library before being incorporated into the newly-created Souvenir Album XI c.1930.Provenance
