Richard Caton Woodville (1856-1927)
Prince Albert Victor of Wales in India, hunting bison c.1889
-
An illustrator's drawing of Prince Albert Victor, on a hunt in India. At the time, the hunting of exotic animals was a popular sport without the concerns that are prevalent today. The Prince and Captain Holford stand to the right, beside a dead guar. The man, who gestures at the head of the guar, is likely Iyappen — a tracker who accompanied the party on the hunt (see J.D. Rees and G.P. Sandserson, Duke of Clarence and Avondale in Southern India, 1891, p.175).
Prince Albert Victor visited India for five months from November 1889, Caton Woodville was there with him, working for the Illustrated London News. The drawing was reproduced in the ILN, 23 January 1892: The First Bison; Daily Graphic Special Number, 15 January 1892, following the death of the Prince. -
