A watercolour drawing of a standing figure. Inscribed: June 28 1897/ At the Queen's Garden Party. Artist's monogram. Inscribed below on the mounting paper: 'Cingalese Grandee from Kandy', 28 June.
At the Garden Party in 1897 Queen Victoria hosted a number of visitors from Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka). Delia Millar suggested that this drawing may depict Maha Mudaliyer don Solomon Dias Bandaranaike, although that identification is unlikely. It may show another ruler of Ceylon. The photograph RCIN 2915349 may show the same sitter.
Another version of this drawing was sold at Pritchett's sale, 1907, for £1, along with a version of RCIN 920903. -
