A gillie, wearing a shepherd's check kilt, holds a saddled grey pony. Signed and dated at lower right.
The watercolour is a study for Morning in the Highlands: The Royal Family ascending Lochnagar (RCIN 451257), in which the gillie does not appear, the pony climbs more steeply and the Prince is shown in the saddle. For this study Haag used a calotype by Dr Becker, a copy of which was accquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (RCIN 2906501). -
