Schloss Molsdorf: reconstruction of an interior with figures playing cards c.1845
-
A pencil drawing of an interior in Schloss Molsdorf with a group of figures playing cards, others entering the room. The man escorting a lady at left is identified on the mount as Prince von Anhalt-Zerbst; the card players, with a lady, are named as Count Keller, Count Keiserling and Count Götter. Inscribed.
This sheet and RCIN 920663 are historical reconstructions of two of the eighteenth-century interiors in Schloss Molsdorf. Count Gustavus Adolphus von Götter bought the castle in 1732 and lived an extravagant life there until the outbreak of the Seven Years' War. The castle was later acquired by the Dukes of Saxe-Gotha.
Together, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert mounted many of their drawings related to Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in three albums, and a surviving typescript list of their contents is presumed to accurately reflect their arrangement. These albums were dismantled around 1930 and many of the drawings were rearranged in the new, topographical, Souvenir Albums. The third of the albums, titled 'Views of Scenery in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha' and from which this drawing derives, probably comprised Prince Albert's own collection of drawings.
Provenance
Originally mounted in the third volume of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha albums, no. 74b, probably from the collection of Prince Albert
